Andropogon gerardii Red October Fall Color A New Take on Big Bluestem

Foliage turns brilliant candy-apple red after first frost.

Now there’s a new take on native grass Big Bluestem: Andropogon gerardii ‘Red October’ PPAF.

Instead of the blue tones of classic Big Bluestem, ‘Red October’ shakes things up with a fresh palette of colors.

Foliage kicks off deep green with burgundy highlights in spring and red shades increase as the plant matures.

Then, after first frost, foliage changes to a stunning scarlet reminiscent of the color of candy apples.

Red October Big Bluestem is an Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, Inc. selection, chosen in large part for this surprising fall show, but also because of other important virtues: it is resistant to deer and other critters, tolerates poor soil and drought, and withstands cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

It can reach up to 6′ with red-tinted, turkey-foot-shaped blooms. Combine Red October Big Bluestem with mixed perennials in the landscape and use its height and stunning fall color as an accent. It is also a great choice for meadows and naturalistic plantings.

Hoffman Nursery is pleased to add this hot, new, Big Bluestem to our native grass lineup. We have 18s available now.  Email our sales team or call (919-479-6620) for more information or to place an order.
