Color Blast with Little Bluestem

For the past few months, we’ve been watching a planting of Schizachyrium scoparium ‘The Blues’. It’s in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Little Bluestem provides food and shelter for insects, birds, and small mammals—that’s one of the reasons it’s included in the Discovery Garden.

Watching these plants has reminded us how gorgeous and changeable this North American native can be. It’s difficult to find a short description for the color of Little Bluestem. It’s all over the place. For now, we’ll let pictures do the talking.
