Bill Hall has joined the Hoffman Nursery team as our new Head Grower. He brings more than 30 years of experience in the horticulture industry. In the past, Bill has worked for Carolina Nurseries, AG 3, and ArborGen.
His expertise includes plant production and scheduling, propagation, tissue culture, and plant health. He also has extensive management experience organizing and building teams across disciplines.
Bill will direct growing operations at the nursery, with a focus on ensuring optimum plant quality. “Bill Hall brings a wealth of ideas and strengths to the growing team,” says John Hoffman, President of Hoffman Nursery. “I look forward to our growing program expanding and becoming even more innovative with his guidance.”
For our customers, Bill’s years of experience growing finished products are a big plus. He brings a fresh perspective on what’s important to growers. He understands how strong liners make it easier and more efficient to produce large, finished containers. His added expertise will ensure customers get the advice and top-quality liners they need to produce prime plants.
As Head Grower, Bill will train and supervise the growing department staff and oversee the nursery’s plant health program. His plans include increasing growers’ expertise through coaching, education, and interaction with other departments. He will work closely with the production team to optimize plant transition from production to growing.
Greenhouse Grower magazine recently caught up with Bill to ask him about the industry and his plans.
Greenhouse Grower (GG): How did your previous experience prepare you for this new role?
Bill Hall: I spent most of my career with Carolina Nurseries as a propagator and production manager. Having grown finished material for the trade makes me appreciate the value of a high-quality liner. Since my time at Carolina Nurseries, I had the privilege of producing top-notch liners at AG 3, and now at Hoffman Nursery. I am excited to be providing top-quality material to the industry.
GG: What are the biggest challenges this industry is currently facing? Conversely, what are some of the biggest opportunities on the horizon?
Bill: Two of our biggest challenges are losing customers as the population ages, and the growing perception that millennials are not embracing our product. A big opportunities is finding a way to play an active role in the environmental movement. Innovative and forward-thinking nursery managers should be regarded as stewards of the environment. We can do a better job of showing the good we do.
GG: Looking ahead, what role can you play in moving this industry forward?
Bill: My crew at Hoffman Nursery is comprised of intelligent and energetic millennials who are excited about learning all there is to know about their plants. They are the future of the industry, and I am going to do my best to cultivate this passion.
GG: If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing?
Bill: Either an attorney or a bird-dog trainer.
