Boggy areas can become good-looking landscapes when planted with Variegated Sweet Flag. This moisture-loving plant reaches just under one foot in height. Its one-eighth inch wide, creamy white- and green-variegated leaves form a blade shape that looks grasslike, yet distinctive. Acorus gramineus ‘Variegatus’ is happiest in wet soils, and it will spread slowly by rhizomes to create a ground cover. Planted in average soil, spreading is reduced, but it would be important to water it well as brown tips can occur if soil is too dry. Variegated Sweet Flag is a good choice to accent the edges of ponds and water gardens; it will live submerged in water. Like others in the Acorus genus, Variegated Sweet Flag emits a pleasant citrus scent when the leaves are crushed. This plant grows well in shade or sun and will keep its coloring year-round.
