Finally, a sedge for those who love bright and showy. This Carex stands out from the crowd with cherry-blossom pink spikes that rise above wide, green foliage. Dr. Richard Olsen, Director of the US National Arboretum, brought us this delightful sedge from the Kunming Botanical Garden in China. It’s native to stream sides and slopes in southern China and Vietnam. The foliage is arching and attractive, with broad blades up to 1.25” wide, narrowing at the tips. The flowers are borne on sturdy scapes—the scaposa to which the botanical name refers. In our experience and in reports from others, it is a repeat bloomer, offering pink flowers in early spring and early fall. It can take a couple of seasons to establish and become full, so patience is rewarded. We’ve found it to be a strong performer in the moist, well-drained media of container plantings. It’s a showy choice for those of you in zones 7-9.
To help continue their exploration and conservation efforts, $0.10 from every plant sold will be donated to the US National Arboretum.
