Still the king of Southern landscapes, Pampas Grass has long been planted along long driveways and in large gardens. This ornamental grass giant is evergreen(in warmer areas) and is well-loved for its impressive white plumes and commanding presence. Cortaderia selloana is suited for the heat. It is native to the South American plains (the ‘pampas’) where temperatures soar and the wind can blow steadily. To care for Pampas Grass, cut it back each spring; a good pair of shears is important, and so is protective clothing to minimize scratches from its sharp grass blades. In warm climates, Pampas Grass may need to be replaced after a harsh winter. It is very drought tolerant and is not picky about soil.
