Deschampsia flexuosa has billowy masses of tiny, bronze-to-purple colored panicles that last and last. Vibrant green, thin leaves grow to about 1.5 feet; with the airy panicles hovering above on thin stems. Crinkled Hair Grass is undemanding about soil and water, and is content in shade to part sun. Deschampsia flexuosa is a good plant for naturalizing, and it looks dramatic when planted in masses, especially when the wind blows the open panicles. It is a fine choice for restoration or for landscape projects that require a native grass that is also ornamental. It also does quite well on green roofs and as a matrix plant in layered plantings.
It is a cool-season native grass that does particularly well in Northern climates, but also survives our North Carolina summers when planted in shade or under the edges of taller perennials and shrubs. In the botanical literature, some sources list this as Avenella flexuosa. For now we’re keeping it in Deschampsia. Must ship by May 31.
