  • Native to North America
  • Drought Tolerant

  • Growth rate: medium-fast
  • Grow in 2 or 3 gallon containers or larger
  • Grow in well-drained soil
  • Water needs: keep evenly moist
  • Fertilizing: use a slow release, medium-rate fertilizer
  • Possible pests: leaf spot, spidermites
  • Overwintering: cold frame with clear poly; do not overwater; can overwinter outside if protected from cold and excess water
  • Plants in the Panicum genus can be cut back, but they take longer to grow back than other grasses.

  • One of the tallest switchgrasses; good for screening, use as a specimen, or plant in the background with contrasting-colored plants in front
  • Beautiful blue-gray foliage color
  • Lovely, airy seed heads in July last into winter
  • Grows in varied conditions, including inhospitable soil
  • Adds interest to the landscape in fall and winter
  • Requires no fertilizer and very little maintenance (cut back in spring before new growth appears)
