  • Growth rate: medium-fast
  • Grow in 1, 2 or 3-gallon containers
  • Grow in well-drained soil
  • Water needs: keep evenly moist
  • Fertilizing: use a slow release, medium-rate fertilizer
  • Possible pests: aphids, leaf spot, spidermites, rust
  • Overwintering: cold frame with clear poly, keep dry; can overwinter outside if moisture level is monitored
  • Avoid excess moisture and fertilizer (causes floppy growth)

  • Outstanding powder blue foliage with wide leaf blades
  • Maintains its upright shape when planted in poor soil with no fertilizer—too much water and fertilizer may cause a lax appearance
  • Good specimen or accent and is also stunning in mass plantings or in decorative urns
  • Airy seed heads hover above the top of the plant from July through fall; plant remains interesting through the winter months in its dormant stage
  • Cut back in spring before new growth appears
