This red switchgrass gets its name from its numerous burgundy-tipped leaves. Panicum virgatum ‘Rotstrahlbusch’ grows in an upright shape to about three feet, four feet with red-tinted, airy seed heads. Its fall coloring is especially lovely; foliage becomes deep red turning to tan as winter approaches. It provides structure and form in the winter garden. ‘Rotstrahlbusch’, roughly translated, means “red ray bush,” which is a good description of its appearance. Be sure to cut it back in early spring before new growth appears. From our experience, this red switchgrass is similar to Panicum virgatum ‘Hänse Herms’.

GROWER INFO & TIPS
- Growth rate: fast
- Grow in 1, 2 or 3 gallon containers or larger
- Grow in well-drained soil
- Water needs: keep evenly moist
- Fertilizing: use a slow release, medium-rate fertilizer
- Possible pests: aphids, leaf spot, spittlebugs
- Overwintering: cold frame with clear poly; do not overwater; can overwinter outside if protected from cold and excess water
- Plants in the Panicum genus can be cut back, but they take longer to grow back than other grasses.
