In the world of Switchgrass, P. virgatum ‘Squaw’ is a treasure. We’ve enjoyed it in our display garden for years and have gotten to know it well. It’s one of the smaller Pancium virgatum cultivars. Compared to others of similar size, it has thicker stems and wider leaves, which give it an upright, sturdy look. Leaves appear green on one side and slightly bluish on the underside. The green foliage provides a visual resting place in landscape designs. ‘Squaw’ tops off the growing season with super-abundant, showy, pink-hued inflorescences. Showy Switchgrass has the great properties we expect from Panicum, such as drought and soil tolerance, low maintenance, and a winter food source for wild birds. It is another wonderful introduction from plantsman Kurt Bluemel. We are pleased to include it in our Panicum lineup.
