Pennisetum villosum is well-loved for its pretty, white, bottlebrush plumes, which are perfect for cut flowers. These dramatic plumes contrast with trailing clumps of narrow green foliage. This attractive combination of flowers and foliage helped give Feathertop Grass the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2002. Pennisetum villosum is slightly hardier than Pennisetum setaceum. Under ideal conditions in warm climates, it can spread by rhizomes and by seed. Pluck unwanted seedlings from the landscape. In cooler climates, treat Feathertop Grass as a fast-growing annual. Great for borders, annual beds and decorative containers.
