This cultivar of native Indian Grass was selected for its metallic blue foliage and upright habit. Foliage grows in a compact blue mound, and stems soar up to six feet. Elegant golden-tan plumes appear in late summer. Indian Grass is known for being drought tolerant once established and for tolerating a range of soils. It thrives in infertile locations (too much soil fertility will cause it to flop). This sun-loving native grass cultivar is beautiful when planted in masses or used as a single specimen. Sorghastrum nutans ‘Sioux Blue’ also acts as a border or screen, and because of its height, as a vertical accent. Let it stand throughout winter to give interest to the landscape and cut back before new growth appears in spring. Sorghastrum nutans ‘Sioux Blue’ was selected by author and ornamental grass authority, Rick Darke.
