What We Grow

Grasses: The backbone of Hoffman Nursery’s growing program is ornamental and native grasses. The more we learn, the more we appreciate grasses for their beauty, functionality, and environmental muscle. Most grasses have efficient, fibrous root systems, allowing them to survive during droughts and in inhospitable soil. True grasses reside in the Poaceae family and have the widest worldwide distribution of all flowering plant families.

Sedges: Sedges inhabit varied ecosystems and come in a kaleidoscope of colors, textures, and sizes. Many make fantastic choices for lawn alternatives and ground covers. Others sparkle in containers, mixed plantings, and color beds. Most species in the genus Carex are referred to as sedges and belong to the Cyperaceae family. They are distinguished from true grasses by their triangular stems and other subtle characteristics.
Other Grasslike Plants: We also grow plants that resemble grasses but belong to different botanical families. Juncus, in the Juncaceae family, offer stylishness and structure for wet and moist areas. Many withstand dry spells once established, making them great choices for rain gardens. Acorus, in the Acoraceae family, and Equisetum, in the Equisetaceae family, are happiest in moist and wet soils.
