Sweet Flag is a grasslike plant useful for wet or moist areas, but it will also grow in regular garden soil with adequate moisture. It has wide, green, swordlike foliage, which rise directly from branched rhizomes. Acorus calamus was introduced to North America and has naturalized throughout much the Eastern US and Canada, the Midwest, and the western coastal US states. This plant has a rich history, used in ancient Europe, India, and Asia for its purported medicinal properties, as well as for the pleasant tangerine scent it emits when bruised. Sweet Flag tolerates full sun or part shade, provides shelter for waterfowl, and easily graces the edges of ponds and water gardens with architectural beauty.
